Adventure Summer Unschool for 2014 Currently Forming

It has been a long winter -- a winter of reading, conversing, contemplating, dreaming, and brainstorming. Our bodies may be stiff from hibernation, but the sap is rising, and it is time to sow the seeds of projects that we want to nourish this Spring and Summer, and bring to fruition.

For me, this is the year, long-awaited, of the Unschool. I have spoken to many parents and young people who are intrigued by the notion that they might be FREE to explore the world and learn, at their own pace, outside a classroom's confining walls. Learning by doing, trying and failing, by observing and participating, by practicing the arts of community.

The Adventure Summer Unschool will be a series of three weekend gatherings in three different learning environments: the Wilderness (Red River Gorge), the Farm (TBD), and the City (Lexington).

A schedule of learning and work activities will be planned with knowledge guides, but there will also be plenty of time set aside just for exploring, making friends, and napping in the shade.

Parents will be responsible for their children, but they are encouraged to develop creative and collaborative approaches to supervision that does not interfere with the child's exploration.

If you are interested in participating in this program, either as a guide or as a child/parent, please contact me at martin.mudd at gmail.com

I will write more here about my vision to establish a year-round Unschool group for adolescents in the greater Lexington area.

For now, a brief answer to the big question: "What is Unschool?"

Unschool is a collective of independent radical educators facilitating community-supported experiential learning.
