Exploring Town Branch with Adventure Unschool, 9/6

Last Saturday, a small band of hardy unschoolers joined the Adventure Unschool for its first Explore Lexington outing. After gathering at the Central Library, we walked out into a beautiful day and peeked into the CentrePitte where we saw what looked like pools and flows of water - signs of the Town Branch creek that flows beneath Lexington.

To investigate further, we walked by the Fifth Third building (aka the big blue trashcan), where a subterranean microphone allowed us to hear the faint bubbling of Town Branch's flow. More folks joined us as we made our way to the parking lot behind Rupp Arena, where Town Branch emerges into daylight. We cooled our heels and discussed the many ways we observe Flow in our lives and in nature. Next time, I need to appoint an official photographer because I was too busy flapping my gums to take any pictures!

Then Will Bunge led us to the shade of an overpass and shared a physical and philosophical exercise on Flow and Resistance. Participants asked lots of good questions, and the little ones enjoyed playing in the shade.

The remaining crew walked to Goodfellas Pizzeria for a well-earned slice and a mini-lecture on the flows of matter and energy involved in the formation of the solar system. Satisfied and foot-weary, we returned to the library, enjoying the flush of downtown activity due to the Pagan Pride and Roots and Heritage Festivals. What a great day it was to Explore Lexington!

Be sure to join us for our next Explore Lexington outing - October 4 - on the theme of "Origin".

Also, join the Adventure Unschool for the LIVING ARCHAEOLOGY WEEKEND in the Red River Gorge on September 20. Free. Meet at 10am at the entrance of the Gladie Learning Center, look for Martin holding the AU sign. (http://www.livingarchaeologyweekend.org/)

Adventure Unschool Afternoon: Explore Lexington series: "Flow"

Learners of all ages are invited to join the Adventure Unschool on Saturday, 9/6 for an afternoon of exploring Lexington's urban environment.

We will meet at the Downtown Library lobby at 12, then go for a walk along Town Branch and talk about "flow" in our lives and the world, then take a break for a mini workshop on flow in hip hop.

After that we'll walk and talk some more, then cool down with a short flow yoga or tai chi lesson. We'll cap it all off with kickball and a potluck afterwards in Woodland Park!

This event is free and open to learners of all ages and physical abilities. I plan to walk, but you are also welcome to ride a bike or a car if you prefer. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle and a snack!

If you can't make it for the entire outing, follow @AdvUnschool on Twitter, and we'll send out updates of where we are and where we're headed, so you can meet us at our next destination.

Please RSVP on the facebook event page if you plan to come: https://www.facebook.com/events/793276024027433
