SERVICES

Coach * Mentor * Tutor * Workshop

We facilitate learner-empowered, community-supported, experiential education.
Coach
For families who wish to adapt the unschool approach to learning for their particular situation, I offer a coaching service that involves both the young Learner and their Parent-mentor.

This is an excellent option for "home-schoolers" as well as for students at conventional schools who wish to overlay a more empowering framework for self-cultivation.

Even if you are convinced that unschooling is right for your family, it can be frightening and overwhelming for parents just starting out. The good news is that anyone can learn to do it: by re-programming our minds on the purpose and process of education, learning to listen and trust, and activating our creative imaginations, unschooling becomes natural and easy.

In the initial conversation, I explain how the unschooling concept works and we map out the components of the process.

In subsequent meetings, Parents learn how they can be effective mentors for young learners by:

  - unpacking pre-existing assumptions of what education is, and coming to inhabit a new story of creative learning

  - identifying expectations and emotional projections and how these can affect learning

  - modeling holistic self-cultivation in their own lives: physical, mental, creative, emotional, and spiritual

  - learning to accept and trust their Learner's choices of goals, activities, and flows of energy and attention, while encouraging them to

  - how to help their Learners find the materials, environments, and tutors they need

  - how to diagnose and address stagnation, imbalance, and other obstacles.

Then, during model mentoring sessions, Parent-mentors observe as I coach the Learners to develop and implement a personal curriculum of self-cultivation. See the Mentor section below for more details.

When the Parent-mentor is ready, they can begin to take the reins.

Mentor

During mentoring sessions, I work one-on-one with the highly-motivated client to develop a personal curriculum of self-cultivation.

In the initial consultation, we assess the client's current status and potentials, then we identify personal goals and practices for growing the physical, mental, creative, emotional and spiritual intelligences.

If the client is interested, I find it useful to consult the client's astrological natal chart and transits for archetypal influences, potentials and challenges.

In subsequent mentoring sessions, we check in on progress, identify obstacles to growth, make necessary adjustments, and connect with resources that support the client's goals.

My goal as a practitioner is to help the client gradually achieve autonomy in their own self-cultivation. I have found that it is absolutely necessary for Learners and Parents to come to an open and honest agreement on goals and expectations, or there will be underlying tensions that interfere with the work.

Tutor

I can provide all-ages group and individual private tutoring for general learning and for specific topics: maths, physics, intro Japanese language, computer programming, prose writing, history, carpentry, living skills, etc. If I do not feel comfortable teaching the desired topic, I will happily provide a reference to another educator.

I have more than ten years teaching experience, and have developed a personalized, learner-oriented approach that seeks deep, authentic understanding of the material, rather than superficial memorization.

Sessions may include guided practice, problem solving, mini-lessons, discussions, sharing the products of learning, creative expression, laboratory work, etc, and can follow an established textbook or curriculum or simply explore a field of knowledge in response to a learner's curiosity.

If review of student work is required (i.e. comments/corrections on math problem sets, essays, etc) I will bill for these hours at the same rate.
